DataComm Plus was originally founded by brothers and former high school science teachers Bob and Tom Sodemann. In 1981, they saw a need arising from the telecommunications industry, which was on the cusp of a revolution after the break-up of the AT&T monopoly. They answered that need with Phones Plus, Inc. Heavily influenced by their father, Robert, a former AT&T engineer, they set out to do things differently — and better.
Their father told the boys that 90 percent of all businesses had 20 percent too many phone lines. With that, the boys made it the mission of their company to reduce redundancies and invest the money saved in newer, more efficient, more feature-rich equipment. They set out to help businesses in the Southeast Wisconsin area to cut the cord on their unused phone lines and to spend that money saved on updated phone systems.
It was a business model that worked, and 30 years and more than 4,000 phone systems later, Bob and Tom — along with their dedicated team of sales consultants, engineers, technicians, customer advocates and office personnel — have yet to stop growing. Their global approach to telecommunications ensures they’re always finding new ways to provide the best equipment and services in the industry.

DataComm Plus – A History
1981 – Bob and Tom Sodemann create Phones Plus, Inc. to sell, install and service business phone systems in Southeast Wisconsin.
1985 – Ultimate Call Accounting is invented to audit and reduce business phone expenses.
1986 – Ultimate Call Accounting goes nationwide, adding hundreds of dealers who begin implementing the Phones Plus selling method.
1989 – Phones Plus becomes distributor for Wisconsin Bell/Ameritech and begins selling phone lines and other connectivity solutions.
1999 – Phones Plus becomes the 8th member of Technology Assurance Group (TAG, 120 members strong as of 2011), a national organization designed to promote best practices in the industry and reduce customer costs through collective purchasing.
2001 – Tom co-authors a book, “How to Purchase a Telephone System for Your Business,” which sells more than 10,000 copies.
2007 – Phones Plus begins selling “Equipment as a Service” and adds internet “Hosted IP systems” to its offerings.
2009 – Phones Plus begins offering a full range of data services to its existing customer base.
2011 – Phones Plus adopts a new name — DataComm Plus — to reflect increasing data offerings. DataComm Plus relocates headquarters to Franklin, Wis., and continues to expand and grow.
