Communication is one of the most effective tools you need for conducting successful business practices. Because many employers have busy schedules and are often on the go, they often communicate and conduct their business remotely. One way to do this is through video conferencing. If you have a job interview coming up, and the employer or client requests a video conference, there are a few things you need to do to be prepared.
How To Ace Your Interview Via Video Conference
Pre-Interview System Check
It is important to check your computer’s hardware and software prior to starting the video conferencing session. Make sure your system can handle the software that the employer wants to use for the video conferencing interview. Also make sure to close out of all programs prior to the interview—this will prevent interruption and lag times. Check your camera to ensure proper positioning and that the resolution is clear.
Have a Copy of your Resume on Hand
The employer should already have a copy of your resume and references on hand prior to video conferencing. Be sure to make a mirror copy of exactly what the employer has so you are not caught off guard with having to recall specific dates and information. Do some research about the company so you have a general understanding of some of the questions the employer may ask you regarding specific job tasks and capabilities.
Dress the Part
Just like an in-person interview, you should dress professionally for video conferencing. Avoid bright colors, or tops with patterns and prints. Stay away from dark hues that may blend into the background. Keep colors neutral and stick to solids. Dress as you would if you were going to an in-person interview.
Minimize Background Noise
It is important to keep all background noise at bay. This means shut off your cell phone, home phone and any alarm systems. Request that family members, especially children are in a separate room or away from the home during the video conferencing interview. Choose a location that is quiet and without distractions from outdoor noise and loud animals.
By sticking to a few basic tips, you can experience a successful video conferencing interview and land the job of your dreams!
