Some employers are hesitant to allow employees to take breaks throughout the day, as they believe it takes away from employee productivity. However, this thinking is wrong. Studies have shown that a few mini breaks throughout the day  can actually help in increasing employee productivity.

How Mini Breaks Increase Employee Productivity

If you are wondering how this phenomenon works, take heed. Suppose your employees are doing a work activity that results in mental stress. Over time, this takes a mental and physical toll on one’s ability to work. To prevent this from occurring, mini breaks at work are essential to the maintenance of a positive workplace.

The way it works is simple. After every hour of operation, have employees engage in a mini break, and during this time, encourage them to try to not think about workplace affairs and problems that are bothersome. These mini breaks should range between 3-5 minutes. No longer, though, as that could actually interrupt employee productivity. Although your employees will not have time to take a walk in the fresh air during this time, it should be long enough to help them shake off fatigue and stress, making them more productive than ever.

In addition, your employees must have one full break. One full break is required by Article 108 of the Labor Code. According to the statute, this full break should not be less than 30 minutes or more than two hours.

Is the majority of your employees’ work done at a computer screen? If this is the case, be sure to have them rest every half hour for about five minutes. During this mini break, stepping away from the computer is crucial, as it gives the eyes a much needed break. Eye strain can result in a decrease of employee productivity, something no employer or employee wants. Every three hours have employees engage in longer breaks, though. Getting outside or doing eye exercises is also beneficial during these times.

Does the work your employees do entail a lot of physical exertion? Small breaks are an absolute must for these workers. If these measures are not taken, employee productivity may take a serious dip. The time and length of a break should depend on the nature of the work.

For example, your workers need to listen to their body. After sitting for a long time, muscles go numb, something that greatly decreases employee productivity. Failure to take breaks can also result in pain in the neck, lower back, chest, and tailbone. These are all signals that your body needs rest. As a preventative measure, have employees take short breaks at work, even if they are small (about 2-5 minutes). Standing up and doing simple exercises can also help you avoid varicose veins, swelling of the legs, back and joint problems, and — you guessed it — increase employee productivity.

Every employee is different, but most of the following options are ways to enhance these mini breaks, improving overall employee productivity:

1. Play relaxing music.
2. Indulge in occasional treats like coffee or chocolate.
3. Look at something visually appealing.
4. Wash your hands and face with water.
5. Slowly drink a glass of water.

  1. I sit in front of computer all day so small breaks are not only nice to have, they are self-required. Even real short breaks to go to the bathroom usually rejuvenate me for a while.

  2. I think everyone can relate to staring for too long at a computer screen and needing a break from it. It’s hard on your eyes and depending on how you are positioned, it is most likely bad on your posture. If anything, tiny breaks throughout the day won’t only be good for productivity but also on your health.

  3. There are a number of things employers can do to increase productivity. Taking breaks, asking questions, bringing in games, the list is endless. As long as the team chemistry stays strong productivity will soon follow.

  4. If your office is lacking excitement, developing a team exercise during parts of the day may help. It’s okay to want to stir up some fun around the office if it promotes productivity.
